The Summit JLC Hebrew School was established by Congregation Ohr Shalom (The Summit JCC) as an egalitarian, progressive synagogue, located in the heart of Summit, New Jersey. For more than 80 years we have been a spiritual and social home for congregants who are drawn to our vibrant, inclusive Jewish community that embraces our tradition while welcoming members of diverse backgrounds and levels of observance.
The Hebrew School supports high-quality Jewish learning. We engage our students’ ages 5 to 18 in conversations which are critical for childrens’ intellectual and emotional growth. We engage our students through a strong sense of commitment to cultivate a deep connection for Hebrew language, Jewish culture, Jewish heritage, encouraging wonder and engaging their spirit with hands-on learning, Hebrew prayer, Jewish music, and stories deeply rooted in our heritage. Students of all backgrounds, cultures, and gender identities are welcome.
Our excellent faculty believes in the ancient biblical phrase, taken from the Book of Proverbs (22:6), and was King Solomon's brilliant pedagogical philosophy of "Educate each child according to their own way." At the JLC, we are committed to that philosophy when it comes to Jewish Education.
The Summit JLC now offers Sunday in-person, morning classes. Our Wednesday remote afternoon classes are in small groups, teaching Hebrew language and reading.
Our School has become the beacon for the Jewish community in the region.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah … the B Mitzvah celebration, emphasizes teaching our children to become participants in Jewish life. Young adults participate in this rite of passage beginning a lifelong process of exploring Jewish wisdom, and being part of a community. One year prior to the B Mitzvah, students begin weekly, individual tutoring with the Rabbi and Cantor. Four months before B date, each student will write their D’var Torah and plan their mitzvah project.
