Pre-K - 2nd Grade
Kibbutz Katan (for students ages 3 and 4) through 2nd Grade meet on Sunday mornings from 9:30-11:30 am. This two-hour period is broken up into several instructional blocks, depending on grade.
Kibbutz Katan (Ages 3-4)
Our youngest learners enjoy 90 minutes of art, reading, and play based instruction, broken down into 20-30 minute digestible lessons. At the end of the day, they join the older primary students for T’filah B’shira, prayer and music, with Cantor Janet Roth to conclude their day. The goal of Kibbutz Katan is to teach the basics of Judaism, including the holidays, basic Jewish concepts, and simple Hebrew words and blessings.
Kindergarten & 1st Grade
Our K/1 students enjoy 20 minutes of “Library” where they hear and learn from a story from our extensive Jewish children’s library, 30 minutes of Hebrew letter learning, and 40 minutes of Judaic studies before concluding their day in T’filah B’shira with Cantor Janet. Through art, music, reading, and play, students learn about everything from the holidays to tzedakah to basic Torah stories.
2nd Grade
The Second Grade schedule has the same breakdown as K/1, with 20 minutes of Library, 30 minutes of Hebrew, 40 minutes of Judaics, and closing music and prayer with Cantor Janet. Building off of skills they learned in K/1, but carefully planned in such a way that they won’t be behind if joining us for the first time, students learn the letters of the Alef-Bet, the sounds each letter makes, and how to write each letter. In Judaic Studies, students learn about different kinds of mitzvot, and how they can participate in them, even at their young age. Finally, they learn about the people, places, and things inside of a synagogue.
